Tesori d’archivio: i poster illustrati dei quotidiani statunitensi di fine ‘800

Se Edward Penfield fu il più celebre e importante tra gli artisti del manifesto commerciale negli Stati Uniti di fine ‘800 e inizio ‘900, non fu certo l’unico. Oltre a lui e a Ethel Reed (della quale magari parleremo nel prossimo futuro, vista anche la sua movimentata storia personale) furono molti i talenti che parteciparono a quella che negli USA fu una vera e propria età dell’oro del poster.
Purtroppo molti di essi sono rimasti senza nome, ma alcune delle loro opere sono giunte fino a noi grazie alla sterminata collezione di stampe della New York Public Library, la biblioteca pubblica di New York, che già nel 1900 creò una sezione appositamente dedicata alle stampe d’arte, che poi andò negli anni ad arricchirsi anche con i poster commerciali, tra i quali quelli che pubblicizzavano l’uscita dei supplementi domenicali dei quotidiani.

Giornali come il Philadelphia Press, il New York Journal, il New York World o il Cleveland Leader, che oggi non esistono ancora più, oppure il Boston Herald, che invece esce ancora, solitamente pubblicavano nel fine settimana degli inserti femminili, talvolta addirittura a colori, che contenevano modelli per il cucito, figurini di moda, bamboline di carta da ritagliare e costruire.
I manifesti coi quali si annunciava l’uscita di tali supplementi erano delle piccole opere d’arte, e alcune di esse si possono vedere nella collezione di Newspaper posters della biblioteca newyorkese.
Da notare che talvolta le medesime immagini sono utilizzate da giornali diversi: trattandosi di quotidiani locali, evidentemente gli artisti rivendevano le illustrazioni a più clienti.
