Un progetto nato nel 2009 durante lo show finale del corso di laurea del London College of Art, durante il quale è stato lanciato il primo numero di Monika Magazine, rivista a tiratura limitata (solo 500 copie) e a uscita irregolare, il che significa che si inizia a lavorare al prossimo volume solo quando ci sono materiali, tempo e risorse.
La vera domanda però e chi si mette a lavorare, visto che la vera particolarità di questo magazine dedicato al mondo dell’arte è di essere realizzato interamente in forma anonima. Niente firme. Giornalisti, collaboratori, grafici, fotografi e designer scrivono, cercano, intervistano, compongono, scattano, disegnano senza poi avere la soddisfazione di vedere il proprio nome stampato nero su bianco sulle pagine di Monika.
Ma proprio qua sta il gioco: un vero e proprio cortocircuito tra l’ansia da presenzialismo che oggi coinvolge chiunque, dal blogger più sfigato al grande giornalista, e la quasi impossibilità—complici i social network e la schedatura di dati, usi e costumi di chiunque usi un computer o uno smartphone—di restare davvero anonimi.
Tanto più che per chi ha voglia di approfondire e di divertirsi a mettere insieme gli indizi non è poi del tutto impossibile ricostruire l’identità di chi lavora al magazine, che ha pubblicato il suo terzo numero giusto qualche giorno fa.
Monika is the anonymous journal of art and culture. It began as, and remains, a labour of love; a bit of fun; a challenge inspired by a contemporary art scene that tends to put too much weight on a name. Some might say Monika’s premise is annoying, some find it refreshing.
Monika 3 is available as a strictly limited edition of 500 hand-numbered copies showcasing the work of some of the more exciting artists and writers active today. Our contributors come from all over the world, we’ll just leave it to you to work out who they are.
Curated around the theme ‘Wildlife’, Monika 3 explores how creative people have been inspired by the wild to do, or depict, the strangest things. It comprises an assortment of short fiction, essays, interviews, artists’ projects and uniquely commissioned illustration, presented as a full colour magazine that makes the most of what print has to offer.
Monika 3 highlights include behind-the-scenes photographs of Vienna’s Museum of Natural History and discussions with performance artists working atop mountains and across deserts. We hear how a gorilla inspired a cinematographer and a crew of beatnik journalists; we learn about the extraordinary life of botanist Maria Sybilla Merian and we wonder what the other human species may have thought of us.
Monika is an experiment first launched at the Royal College of Art graduate show in 2009. Previous issues have featured in, among others, It’s Nice That, Wallpaper* (Jan 2010), Creative Review (blog & Aug 2011), WAD (Oct 2010) and two books from Gestalten entitled Turning Pages and Behind the Zines: Self Publishing Culture. Monika is published intermittently: whenever its makers have the gumption, or guts, to do so.
